What is the Dell Chassis Management Controller?
The Dell Chassis Management Controller (CMC) is a systems management hardware and software solution for managing multiple Dell blade chassis. The CMC, which is a hot-pluggable module that sits in the back of a Dell blade Chassis, provides a secure web / browser based interface that enables an IT administrator to take inventory, perform configuration and monitoring tasks, remote power on/off blades and enable alerts for events on servers and components in the blade chassis.
A single CMC interface with multi-chassis management capability (which was introduced in CMC version 3.1) can manage up to 9 fully loaded chassis with no additional cabling required. The Dell M1000e chassis (pictured above) has slots for two redundant CMC modules, so that Administrators can still connect to the chassis even if one fails.
The CMC interface integrates with the iDRAC module, so users can perform iDRAC functions such as opening a remote console session from the CMC interface.
Additionally, the Dell Chassis Management Controller allows you to back up and clone settings on the Chassis, and save / apply BIOS profiles for individual blade servers so that adding new blades or chassis to your environment is easier and more automated.
You can also capture a complete Chassis Inventory across all of your chassis that will return detailed information on all of the blades, IO modules, iDRAC cards, etc in your environment.
